I would like to warmly welcome you and to introduce myself. My name is Tony and I am the Chorus Founder & Musical Director. I am lucky to come from a family where music is important, and have grown up with musical influences from a very young age. I started to learn music at the tender age of 4 years old, through the Salvation Army, and played the Cornet to Grade 8. I then moved to Soprano Cornet, followed by Tenor Horn. I also graded in Singing & Piano.
I lived in Australia for 5 years where I had the privilege of singing in one of the best choirs in the Salvation Army in Australia. I was also very fortunate to be able to conduct a choir of some 280 strong singers of all abilities. I have performed on many stages around the world, including the amazing Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York, and many others.
Back in the UK, I had a dream of starting a new community choir, and so, after 2 years of dreaming and planning, I decided to make it a reality. One Christmassy evening in 2009, I stood in Letchworth town centre, handing out flyers inviting people to come along and sing. On the first evening, approx 20 people came, much to my surprise and joy. We have come a long way since then. Chorus has grown to over 70 members. We cover lots of different ages, backgrounds and abilities, and to me that’s the key. I want City Chorus to be open to everyone. We have members from Letchworth and the surrounding towns and villages. Some can read music, many (the majority) can’t. We don’t hold auditions.
I want our rehearsals and performances to be fun, relaxed and a totally different approach to singing. In these tough times, I’d like to make you smile, get your feet tapping and send you home feeling happy.
